AI fueling surge in blue-collar jobs

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation have been growing tremendously giving a rise to interest in blue collar jobs. Over a third of the fastest growing jobs are blue-collar jobs with nearly 2 million new blue-collar jobs forecast over the next 7 years [1]. In addition, the demand appears to be growing quicker than the supply as salaries for these positions are also on a steady rise.

Automation unlikely to replace some skilled jobs

Due to the nature of these jobs the likelihood of them being replaced by AI or automation is extremely low right now. This could be due to lots of factors, but when you consider fields like construction, plumbing, and electrician work it makes sense. The space to operate in is limited, the need for precision is extremely high, and the number of additional factors is hard to measure and predict. AI hasn’t turned into a threat for these positions, but is seen as an additional tool to help assist in work where there used to be no one [2].

Advantages of blue-collar careers

Skilled “blue collar” workers are able to enter the workplace with salaries starting relatively higher than most jobs and they can avoid the time and financial burden of 4-year college/university degrees [3]. For many who are entering the workforce this seems like an easy decision: less financial burden, build a career sooner, growing industry, high starting salary.

Why choose the path of a Crane Operator

Crane operators in the construction industry are considered a highly skilled workforce and are in high demand. As the construction industry grows, supporting roles of blue-collar workers will also grow. There are many blue-collar jobs in the industry to choose from, but few offer a starting salary and initial training expense as competitive as crane operators. Additionally, technology appears unlikely to replace crane operators, but more likely to serve as an additional tool that is used in the field.
