New Mexico

“All crane operators performing construction, demolition, or excavation work must have a valid and current New Mexico license to operate within the State. The Crane Operators Safety Program recognizes those who have successfully completed a course, based on the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), in order to obtain a New Mexico crane operator license before they can operate cranes in New Mexico. Operators with national accreditation from OECP, NCCER, and NCCCO must also obtain a New Mexico crane operator license before they can operate cranes in New Mexico.

Licensing authority is statewide and relates to crane type, tonnage, and seat-time for which licensing is sought.

Pursuant to provisions of the Crane Operators Safety Act, NMSA 1978, §§ 60-15-1 to -15 (2017), no person shall operate cranes unless licensed by the state or otherwise exempt under the Act. Any person, employer, or employer representative operating crane equipment without a proper license, unless exempt, shall be subject to administrative penalties, including, but not limited to, fines, license revocation, stop orders, or other injunctive relief.” (New Mexico Regulation & Licensing Department – Crane Operator Safety Program.)

Training Experience Requirements: 500 hours of seat time within the last 36 months.
