If the mobile crane is driven on a public road, most states require a Commercial Drivers License (CDL). If the crane is stationary or limited to certain area, such as a construction site, a CDL is often not a requirement.

A CDL is also not a requirement for any of the NCCCO practical exams (cranes are stationary), therefore you do not need a driver’s license to attend American Crane School’s crane operator certification program. However, your current or future employer may require that you have a valid driver’s license as part of their employment process.

We have helped many of our candidates get out in the crane field.

At this time, we do not offer Spanish crane operator certification courses.

According to the OSHA Final Rule 1926 subpart CC operators are required to be certified by the type of crane (not capacity). Therefore, you will need a crane operator certification for each crane type you are operating.

After you have received your NCCCO certification, you can begin logging hours with an employer under supervised conditions. In time, you can become a qualified crane operator.

When choosing a crane school, we recommend considering a couple of items.

1. How much does the crane school cost?
2. How long is the course?
3. Can the prep class, written exams, and hands-on exams be completed during the course?
4. What are the crane school pass rates for the written exams?

Here at American Crane School we not only offer the fastest path to crane operator certification but we have had some of the highest pass rates in the country for over 18+ years. The best part? To obtain a CCO ID number you will need to follow these steps:

  1. Go to NCCCO.org and register for a new account.
  2. After registering you will receive a 9 digit ID number used to track your certification (this is NOT the same as the certification number that will be on your card).
  3. Provide the 9 digit ID number to ACS (along with the other required enrollment information) needed to purchase your exam codes.

That’s it! ACS will dot he rest!

After you pass the exams you will receive your certification card with your official certification number!

Apprenticeships can take upwards of a year to complete through trade unions. Here at American Crane School our test prep course gives our candidates all the knowledge they need to pass their written exams, as well as the opportunity to take their hands on practical exams. Our NCCCO crane operator certification course is the fastest, most efficient option to obtain your crane operator certification. Though our course will not ensure that you are a qualified crane operator, it will put a certification card in your pocket leaving the rest to you!

To become a NCCCO certified crane operator you must successfully pass the NCCCO written and practical exams. This process can take as few as 3 days, depending on what crane operator school you go to for your preparatory training. Upon successful completion of these NCCCO exams, you can expect to receive your certification card in the mail within a few weeks. By attending our 3-Day or 5-Day course, you can earn your NCCCO mobile crane operator certification for swing and fixed cab cranes (also includes Service Truck and Boom Truck cranes).

The testing company typically takes 2 – 3 weeks to send the candidates the results of their written tests and about 3 – 5 weeks to send candidates the results of their practical tests. If your results have not come in by that time you should call International Assessment Institute (IAI) at (727) 449-8525.

Times vary although you can expect to receive your certification card in the mail within 3 to 5 weeks from the date you successfully passed your written and practical exams. You may also download the MyCCO App to receive your results faster and digitally.

The NCCCO crane operator certification is good for five years from the date the candidate passes their exams. We encourage students to enroll anytime within their last year of certification to prevent any lapses in certification. After successfully passing your recertification exams, NCCCO will add an additional 5 years onto your original expiration date.

Good luck getting a crane job without it! Crane operator certification (CCO ID) has been the victim of much criticism and rightfully so. “It’s expensive” is probably at the top of that complaint list. Put yourself in an employer’s shoes. Pay a couple of thousand dollars for a crane operator certification for one of your newly hired employees. Then your newly certified employee takes a job at the company across the street for $1.00 an hour more. The employer is then out a bunch of time and money. Or they can hire a candidate with an existing crane operator certification that is ready to work. The answer is clear. Why would an employer even consider giving a job to a candidate without a crane certification? By getting a crane operator certification you help minimize the hiring risk, as virtually all of the employers out there will attest to this.

(Poor Mans Crane Training)

Poor Man's Crane Training

Step 1
Get a pole approximately 8’ long

Step 2
Tie a string approximately 4’ long to the end of the pole

Step 3
Tie a heavy nut or bolt at the end of the string.

Step 5
Put the end of the pole on the ground and practice swinging it around until you learn the concept of how a crane operates and controlling the load.

This may sound strange and you might look stupid doing it so don’t let anyone see you they might laugh at you. But it works.

Yes, you can still attend American Crane School’s NCCCO Crane Operator Certification course even if you have a DUI on your record. However, some employers may require a clean driving record as part of their employment process.

Sometimes the less a candidate knows about cranes the better they will do on the written tests. The reason for this is; candidates that have been operating cranes for years learned things a different way than the books want them to do it. This makes it more difficult for them to unlearn their ways and learn to do it by the book. This is what they are tested on with the crane operator certification exams.

If you have never operated a crane before we probably could not turn you into a super duper crane operator in 3 days. However, if you need to get certified, you come to the right place. If a candidate can add, subtract, and speaks English, we can easily get them passed the written tests the first time. If the candidate speaks English as a second language, we can also make it happen as we have done for hundreds of English as second language candidates.

As far as the practical exams go, if a candidate knows how to stop the load or hook from swinging, with a few pointers they can typically pass the practical exams. If not, they need to get some time on a crane. If no cranes are available to the candidate, our cranes are available at a cost of $150 per hour with an instructor (hand-on crane training). We can typically get a candidate who has never been on a crane through the practical test in less than 2 hours to pass the practical exams. This class is never meant to replace years of experience in the field or an 8400 hour apprenticeship program. The purpose of this program is to get that certification card in your pocket. American Crane School does not write the standards of what a crane operator should know, we are just the most effective program that gets candidates to meet the certification requirements.

Please contact us as soon as possible so we can help you reschedule your course. Please keep in mind that NCCCO requires that we send them an excuse letter explaining the emergency to eliminate any rescheduling fees. Call (888) 967-7277.

You can call NCCCO Testing Services Department at 727-449-8525 to seek clarification on this matter. American Crane School does not have any information as to why candidates fail, we will only be able to specify whether or not a student has passed or failed.

Crane operating experience is not necessary, however, we highly recommend that beginner crane operators with no experience attend our 5-day beginner bundle course.

Yes! American Crane School does not set the standards we are simply the ones that get you to meet them. Once you are certified you have met the minimum requirement, however this does not mean that you are a super duper crane operator.

This is a difficult question to answer. We have seen crane operators knock over a lot of things with fast times and pass. And we have seen crane operators not knock anything over but take too long and fail. There if a balance. The best thing to do is stay within the time limits (try not to knock anything over.)

Absolutely! We can invoice your company directly to pay the fees associated with your course. When enrolling, indicate on the application that your company will be paying for your course. This will allow us to send your employer an invoice.

A NCCCO Certification is not required. However, NCCCO is the industry leader in certification for crane operators and is recognized nationwide. In fact, some employers may only accept NCCCO certification. Although, It’s important to remember that OSHA’s Final Rule specifies that operators within the construction industry must be certified.

That depends on which package you purchase. When you attend our 3-day crane operator certification course, you will receive a 20 minute familiarization period on each crane prior to your NCCCO practical exams. Additional training packages are sold separately for this course. However, when you enroll in our 5-day beginner crane bundle, you will receive 16 hours of field operations with up to 8 hours of practice time.

Everything needed will be provided upon arriving to American Crane School’s NCCCO mobile crane operator certification course. However, it is required that students bring their own personal protection equipment including a hard hat and boots for their hands-on crane training and NCCCO practical exams in the field.

Candidates are required to bring and wear a hardhat and work boots to the practical yard site. Everything else will be provided to you at the time of class. This includes pens, pencils, highlighters and notepads. We also supply handouts such as study guides and load charts to help aid you during the classroom portion of the class.

If your certification has expired for any length of time, NCCCO requires that you retest as a brand new candidate. This means you will have to take the NCCCO written and practical exams.

American Crane School invented the 3 consecutive day crane operator certification program. From hundreds of classes worth of experience we understand how long it takes for people to pass the written tests and take their practical tests. If a class is shorter it is usually not enough to get a candidate through the crane certification exams. If a class is longer this probably means they have time to get into war stories of how big the load was that you lifted, or how much boom you have operated with. As much as we would love to discuss these kinds of things in class we do not set aside time for it.

American Crane School guarantees you pass the written tests after our class or the next class with us is free.

The best way to think about telescopic cranes is by comparing it to a telescope. Just like a telescope, a telescopic crane allows the boom to telescope in and out. To be more technical, telescopic cranes are equipped with a boom outfitted with a hydraulic cylinder that allows it to change length

Please refer to your local department of transportation for more information and specifications.

This is in reference to Recertification. “Candidates who can attest to at least 1,000 hours of crane-related experience during their period of certification do not need to take the practical exam to recertify.” Note, 1,000 hours is reduced to 500 hours for Service Truck Cranes.

“Crane-related experience” is defined as: operating, maintaining, inspecting, or training on cranes.

Reference: CCO MOBILE CRANE OPERATOR CANDIDATE HANDBOOK, p. 1, 10 (“RECERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS”).

The cranes at our facility were specifically selected to make practical examinations easier for students. Think of it this way, would you rather attempt your driving test in a Honda or a semi-truck? The same thing applies here. We use the shortest booms allowable on the smallest cranes to make it easier for students to pass their practical exams. We currently utilize mini crawler cranes for swing cab exams and carry decks for fixed cab exams.

No. For instance if a candidate was to fail 1 specialty written test, the NCCCO would charge the candidate $80 to retest. If the candidate was to fail any other specialty exams, the testing company would charge $80 for each additional/specialty exam (Swing or Fixed), and if the candidate was to fail the core test, the testing company would charge $140. American Crane School does not charge for any candidates who come back for retesting to attend the class or to sit in on the written test. If the candidate was to fail a practical exam, American Crane School charges $395 to retest (per exam, swing or fixed); this price includes the testing fees to IAI the testing company.

We GUARANTEE students will pass the NCCCO written exams or our class is FREE until you do! The only fee required will be the NCCCO retesting fee ranging from $80 to $220 depending on the NCCCO written exam type failed.

OSHA and ANSI set the laws and standards (ANSI B30.5 and OSHA 1926.1400), these laws include crane operator certification. NCCCO tests your knowledge, skills, and abilities to see if you meet the minimum competency requirements set forth by OSHA. If you are successful you get certified (not qualified). There is also an additional step OSHA requires prior to operating a crane. “Employer Qualification” of operator which requires written documentation of the operators competence with a particular machine in a particular configuration. This helps ensure unqualified operators are not beyond their limits. American Crane School offers mobile telescopic crane operator certification through the NCCCO.

If the load starts to go into a circular motion stop one movement at a time first the side to side motion, second it will only swing in and out, than you can stop the back and fourth motion by lowering and raising the boom.

Mobile cranes are the most commonly used across construction sites. A variety of industries across the United States, and internationally, use mobile cranes such as utility, oil & drilling, tree services, crane services, and many more.

A boom truck is a crane consisting of a rotating superstructure, a fixed or telescopic boom, attached to a commercial truck chassis with a payload hauling capability.

Boom Truck Crane (BTF). This is a subcategory on the NCCCO Fixed Cab certification.

The crane’s deck is ideal for loading and moving materials around a job site. Carry deck cranes are typically used in confined conditions and tight spaces.

Each crane has a base or carrier on which the rotating superstructure is mounted. This can include crawlers or wheels.

Lattice Boom Crawler Crane (LBC)

Lattice Boom Truck Crane (LBT)

Mini cranes are typically utilized in tight or confined spaces and off-road and rough terrain applications.

Rough Terrain cranes are often used for off-road “rough terrain” applications.

Service Truck Crane (STC). This is a subcategory on the NCCCO Fixed Cab certification.

Swing cab crane certification (TLL)

Each crane has a base or carrier on which the rotating superstructure is mounted. This can include crawlers or wheels.

Fixed cab crane certification (TSS)

NCCCO stands for the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators. They are the certification company that assesses the minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities of operators through the administration of written and practical exams.

Most candidates just want to practice playing with the practical exam test course or putting the headache ball into the barrels. This could help you if you have already mastered the 5-gallon bucket of water trick. But if you haven’t learned how to control the load this is a waste of time.

View our Study Guides here

For fastest results this is it:

Step 1
Get a 5-gallon bucket

Step 2
Hang the bucket on the hook (the crane should be reeved with a single part line)

Step 3
Fill the bucket almost to the top with water.

Step 4
Practice swinging the crane left and right until you can use half throttle and the swing function or lever is fully engaged. Than bring it to a complete stop without spilling the water or setting it on the down.

Step 5
Practice lowering and raising the boom until you can use half throttle and the swing function or lever is fully engaged. Than bring it to a complete stop without spilling the water or setting it on the down.

Step 6
Combine step 4 and 5 until you can use both of the functions simultaneously without spilling the water.

All terrain cranes have independent rear steering for maneuvering in tight places whereas a truck crane is best for highway conditions and long distance travel.

The median wage for crane operators is about $68,000+ although there are multiple variables that will weigh into this. Such as location, experience, and more. View our latest article that covers ‘Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics for Crane Operators‘ for the latest statistics.

Again like in task 1 and 3 you must know how to control the load. There are point deductions for everything you knock over, if the load touches the ground, if the 3′ chain attached to the bottom of the test weight leaves the ground, and if you go over your optimum time,

View our Study Guides here

Hint 1
If you are not an experienced crane operator ar you are not familiar with the crane don’t show everyone how cool you are using all of the cranes functions at the same time. Use 1 function at a time but don’t let the load stand still, keep the load under control and moving through the course. There is plenty of time if you can control the load and this 1 function at a time method is used. (This will ensure that because you might be nervous you do not grab for the wrong function)

Hint 2
When you are on the way out of the course on task 4B do not get nervous at the end. Many times crane operators get nervous at the very end of the crane practical exam test course and mess up what could have otherwise been a good run.

Hint 3
Its understandable that you are nervous.

If you loose control of the load:

Stop
Think
Act

do not immediately react or you might just make it worse.

This will ensure crane safety and successful completion of your crane practical examination.

Some Crane operators pay for their own certification prior to employment, which can be seen by new employer as taking initiative or having experience. This also reduces the initial training time and cost to an employer.
